Google Reviews: Comparing Koreans vs Vietnamese

Comparing hotel experiences in Hanoi vs Seoul reveals how cultural differences impact guest ratings. Why a superior Korean airport hotel gets lower scores than expected.

Just came back from Old Quarters in Hanoi, Vietnam and I flew to Europe connecting via Incheon. So I needed a hotel for a night to rest and fly the next day to Europe.

One thing that struck me a lot (so much that it deserved to have this blog post) was how low the ratings for Hotel Tour Incheon Airport was compared to the Vietnamese hotel.

For me, I would have collectively rated Elite Hanoi hotel 3.2 stars in Google, while the Korean hotel could've been a 4.9 stars.

Here are the actual ratings:

Elite Hanoi

  • 4.4 stars on Google as of the time of writing
  • Best hotel in 2020 / 2023

My personal observations.. I might not be keen of coming back here.

Pros Cons
Customer service! Some of the rooms are really old and we got one old room
Staff returned my wallet that I accidentally left Somehow I cannot sleep properly at night
The bathroom is a bit run down
The space is too small, both hallways and room
No elevators, but the staff will be willing to carry it for you
Noisy construction in the afternoon

Hotel Tour Incheon

  • 4.1 stars, as of time of writing. I swear I remember this being 3 point something 2 months ago but I didn't have time to write about it.

My personal observations.. I have booked another night here for my transfer.

Pros Cons
Password to the door was texted to me before check in time None
Elevator and Airport Shuttle were available
Right next to the subway
Very spacious room
Room and bathroom were well-built
Complete amenities, even with a bathrobe
Big table for working, sofa for lounging and big area for your luggages
Slept like a baby

Summary

Hotel Tour Incheon deserves a lot more, but I guess the difference in Korean and Vietnamese culture is very much reflected with the difference in standards between two hotels.

Vietnamese, as well as Filipinos and Thais are a happier culture so if you take a look at the establishments around the Old Quarters, it's not difficult to find 5-star restaurants with thousands of reviews.
